Frequently Asked Questions

What are the key rules for competitive play?
Competitive squash is built on fair play and smooth flow of the game. The serve must start with one foot inside the service box, and the ball should hit the front wall above the service line before landing in the opposite back quarter. A rally continues until a player fails to return the ball before the second bounce. If any interference or obstruction occurs during the rally, a “let” or “stroke” is given to ensure fairness and safety.
Good movement in squash comes from staying balanced, reacting quickly, and returning to the ‘T’ position after every shot. Focus on light steps, smooth direction changes, and fast recovery. The quicker you can start, stop, and move across the court, the stronger and more efficient your game becomes.
A “let” is called when a player feels they couldn’t play their shot because of an obstruction by the opponent. It should always be requested politely and calmly. The purpose of calling a let is to keep the rally fair and safe for both players, not to argue or delay the game.
Wearing protective eyewear is highly recommended because the ball moves very fast and can easily cause injury. Proper squash shoes help with grip, support, and stability while moving quickly. Light, breathable clothing keeps you comfortable, and some players prefer using a glove for better control during intense rallies.
Training at least three to four times a week helps you progress steadily in squash. Consistent practice builds muscle memory, improves your movement, and strengthens your overall game. Even shorter sessions make a difference as long as you focus on good technique and purposeful training.
Shot accuracy improves when you practice hitting the ball with control rather than power. Spend time aiming for specific areas of the court, especially the corners and side walls. The more you focus on clean contact and precise placement, the more confidently you’ll be able to control rallies during matches.
